My Messier observing lists
for the favourite new moon weekend in March 2004 are available pdf files.
Although intended to use in Central Europe (longitude 9° East) the observation
times for each object can easily transformed to your local time zones.
You go farther south? Good
idea, while marathoning will be easier (and nights probably warmer). Here are
two more lists for 40° (north
Mediterranean) and 35° (south
Mediterranean), both for 9°E.
Apart from data of the
Messier objects each lists contains information about twilight and planet
positions. The calculation are performed using Jan Meeus “Astronomical
Algorithms”, 1991, while the observation sequences are optimised with means of
spreadsheet calculations.
I myself used one of the
observation list for my own marathon while observing with binoculars. As field
guide for star hopping I used E: Karkoschka: “Atlas für Himmelsbeobachter”,1997.
